FUNGAL TREATMENT
Fungal infections are common, but they typically respond well to fungal infection treatments. There are two types of fungal infections: ringworm and yeast. Fungal infections can be painful and uncomfortable, but with fast treatment from a medical professional, they can clear up in a matter of days.
Ringworm, a common condition, can be found anywhere on the body, including the scalp and inside the mouth. It is commonly known as “jock itch” when on the genitals and “athlete’s foot” when on the feet. Ringwork is rarely dangerous, but it can be extremely contagious. If you suspect you have ringworm, seek treatment as soon as possible. This will prevent additional spreading. By contrast, yeast infections are not contagious, but they can appear anywhere on the body. They most commonly occur in the armpits, groin, nail beds, inside the mouth (known as thrush), and the vagina.
If you are experiencing fungal infection symptoms, make an appointment with a dermatologist. These doctors are uniquely equipped to examine your skin for signs of an infection, and they can provide the treatment options you need to quickly rid your body of the condition.
Fungal Infection Causes
Fungi live in the air and in the moist, warm environments of dead tissue, such as the hair, toenails, and the outer layers of skin. The skin is where fungi most commonly causes infections.
Each type of infection has a different cause. Ringworm, for example, is transmitted from direct contact with infected individuals or from contact with contaminated surfaces, such as clothing worn by infected individuals. It can also be passed from infected pets to people, or from infected soil to bare feet. On the other hand, yeast infections are caused by candida, a yeast-like fungus. A diet high in sugar, overconsumption of alcohol, chronic stress, or taking oral contraceptives can enable candida to rapidly increase, causing a yeast infection. More generally, people who are using antibiotics and those who are diabetic or obese are at a greater risk for developing an infection.
Fungal Infection Symptoms
Fungal infection symptoms will depend on the type of fungus present. Ringworm skin sores are often circular, red, flat, and frequently scaly and overlapping. The outer raised edges can encircle normal-looking skin, though ringworm may lack red rash rings. Ringworm on the scalp may start as small sores or bumps. Many other skin conditions resemble ringworm, so it’s best to seek diagnosis by a board-certified dermatologist.
Yeast infections in skin folds may itch or burn and present as rashes, some oozing clear fluid, or pimple-like bumps. Yeast infections inside the mouth may present painful white patches on the tongue and insides of cheeks. Vaginal yeast infections involve white or yellow discharge, itching, burning, and redness around the external vaginal skin.
